What Stock Market Alpha Really Measures
A clear guide to stock market alpha, benchmark excess return, risk adjustment, and the limits of a performance estimate.

Explore trading analytics, understand portfolio performance, and turn complex charts into clearer insights. More context. Better questions. A brighter way to learn.
Understand the numbers
Explore indicators, benchmarks, and the story behind each metric.
Build your process
Turn observations into questions you can document and test.
Same starting point. Different return paths. A comparison is the beginning of the analysis.
Six entry points, each with a clear scope. Trading and portfolio analysis stay central — website analytics is a distinct category with its own language and metrics.
Start with a question
Explore a metric, compare a return path, or build a more useful review.
Measure setups, volatility, outcomes, and context — with clear definitions.
Learn candlesticks, structure, and indicator views without the noise.
Benchmark, attribute, and interpret performance across time horizons.
Study time-of-day behavior, liquidity, and repeatable patterns.
Turn hypotheses into rules, test carefully, and document what you learn.
Track traffic, acquisition, engagement, funnels, and conversions — separate from investment alpha.

Get closer to the chart
Switch between price, volume, moving averages, and momentum. Understand the observation before you interpret the pattern.
Switch the view. Understand what changes.
Twenty completed sessions. Price rises from $100.00 to $108.40, with intervening declines. This is an invented sequence, not an instrument quote.
Volume is a separate illustrative observation for each session. More activity does not determine the direction of the next price move.
Solid: sample price. Dashed: five-session simple moving average. The first four averages are unavailable because five observations are required.
Momentum here means five-session rate of change: (current price ÷ price five sessions ago − 1) × 100. It is not RSI or a trading signal.

Portfolio alpha, put in perspective
Compare the benchmark. Follow the drawdowns. Ask which exposures contributed to the result. A useful performance review makes the assumptions visible.
The examples here show cumulative return and simple benchmark excess return. A risk-adjusted alpha estimate requires a model, not just subtraction.
12 illustrative monthly intervals. Benchmark return: 6.1%. Both series start at 100; no external cash flows. Examples only; no separately modeled fees or taxes.
12 illustrative quarterly intervals. Benchmark return: 18.2%. Both series start at 100; no external cash flows. Examples only; no separately modeled fees or taxes.
A research process you can repeat

Explore the guideOne invented session-based funnel. Each stage is a subset of the preceding stage. Landing-to-order rate: 36 ÷ 1,000 = 3.6%; checkout-to-order rate: 36 ÷ 120 = 30%.
A separate lens: website intelligence
Traffic starts the conversation. Acquisition, engagement, and conversion definitions make it useful. Trace a visitor’s journey without losing sight of the denominator.
Website analytics is its own discipline—not the financial measure of portfolio alpha.

No. The chart labs and performance examples use fixed, invented datasets. They are designed to explain calculations and comparisons, not to quote securities or generate trading signals.
Not necessarily. Simple excess return subtracts a benchmark return. A risk-adjusted alpha estimate measures performance relative to a specified model. Those are different calculations.
No account connection is offered. The site does not request brokerage credentials, wallet signatures, or seed phrases. The sample chart controls run locally in your browser.
