Chart analysis
Explore technical chart analysis with clear intervals, transparent formulas, and an interactive dataset you can inspect.
Name the instrument or sample, the interval, the scale, and the treatment of missing data. A line chart may show only a closing value, while a candlestick encodes several prices within the interval. Neither automatically reveals the sequence of every trade inside that interval.
Read candlestick charts in context for a careful explanation of opens, closes, highs, lows, wicks, and session boundaries.
The chart lab below shows twenty invented closing prices and volume observations. Its five-session simple moving average uses five available closes. Its momentum view uses the percentage change from the close five sessions earlier. A missing initial value means the necessary history is not available; it does not mean zero.
Every tab has an explanation, and the underlying table is available without leaving the page. Download the CSV to reproduce the calculations locally. No market connection is required.
“The sample price is above its five-session average” is a description. “It will rise tomorrow” is a hypothesis about an unobserved result. Keep those statements separate. Indicators calculated from the same prices are not independent pieces of evidence simply because they have different names.
Explore technical indicators to compare the formulas, then use backtesting to define an evaluation procedure rather than selecting a chart that fits a story.
Interactive sample
Switch the view. Understand what changes.
Twenty completed sessions. Price rises from $100.00 to $108.40, with intervening declines. This is an invented sequence, not an instrument quote.
Volume is a separate illustrative observation for each session. More activity does not determine the direction of the next price move.
Solid: sample price. Dashed: five-session simple moving average. The first four averages are unavailable because five observations are required.
Momentum here means five-session rate of change: (current price ÷ price five sessions ago − 1) × 100. It is not RSI or a trading signal.
